DNA Test Now Available for Progressive Retinal Atrophy in Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds
England's Animal Health Trust recently announced the development of a DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) in miniature longhaired dachshunds. An article that appeared in the March, 2005 DCA Newsletter cited the cost of the test at U.S. $40.00. Newer information which appears at the Animal Health Trust's website indicates that the test is GBP 60.00, approximately U.S. $113.00.

A study of diabetes, hypothyroidism, and hemolytic anemia in all breeds is being conducted by Dr. Wayne Potts and the University of Utah. Cheek-swab DNA samples are being collected. A form must be submitted, including a page that is to be completed by the dog's veterinarian. The form and all other information is available at

Dr. Neff is requesting more IVDD cheek swabs. These can be dachshunds that have extreme IVDD without surgery or dachshunds that have had surgery.
